What is Environmental Health?

Environmental public health is the science and practice of preventing human injury and illness and promoting well-being by identifying, evaluating, and limiting exposure to environmental health risks. Health risks include physical, chemical, and biological agents in air, water, soil, food, and other settings that may harm human health.

Many environmental health services are mandated state programs that are carried out by Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS). They help protect the residents and visitors of Shelby by investigating public health and safety issues in workplaces, food preparation facilities, body art establishments, recreational swimming pools, and other environments that impact public health.
